The type
The attack helicopter was invented in Vietnam out of necessity. Troop-carrying helicopters were being shot at on approach, so crews bolted machine guns and rocket pods onto them to suppress the landing zone. The result was slow and overloaded.
The answer was a purpose-built gunship: a narrow fuselage barely wider than a man, crew seated in tandem, and the weight given entirely to armour and weapons rather than cargo. Bell's AH-1 Cobra reached Vietnam in 1967 and set the template every attack helicopter has followed since.
