The van
Volkswagen did not build the first campers. A West Country firm called Westfalia converted VW panel vans into living space from 1951, fitting a bed, a cupboard, a folding table and eventually a pop-up roof — and did it so well that Volkswagen ended up selling the conversions through its own dealers.
The engine sat at the back and produced somewhere between 25 and 50 horsepower depending on the year. It could not climb a serious hill with four people aboard. Nobody who owned one seems to have minded, which tells you what the van was actually for.
