The ship
At 883 feet and 46,328 tons, Titanic was among the largest moving objects ever built when she sailed. Only three of her four funnels were connected to boilers — the fourth was a dummy, added for ventilation and, more honestly, because four funnels looked more impressive than three.
She struck ice at 11:40 p.m. on 14 April 1912 and sank in two hours and forty minutes. Of roughly 2,200 aboard, 705 survived. She carried lifeboats for barely half the people on board, and was fully compliant with the regulations of the day — which were written when ships were a quarter her size.
