Animal helmets

Helmets shaped as animals go back a very long way. Japanese kabuto carried elaborate crests — antlers, horns, rabbit ears, entire creatures — partly for identification on a crowded battlefield and partly for the obvious psychological reason. Roman cavalry sports helmets were made as faces. Norman and Viking helms carried boar and raven imagery.

The logic never changed: a helmet hides a face, and something has to go there instead.
