The car
The 246 took its name from Ferrari's convention: 2.4 litres, 6 cylinders. Mike Hawthorn won the 1958 drivers' championship in one, becoming Britain's first world champion — by a single point, and only because Stirling Moss testified in Hawthorn's defence at a stewards' inquiry that would otherwise have disqualified him.
Hawthorn retired immediately after the season and was killed in a road accident three months later. Within two years, Cooper's rear-engined cars had made the entire front-engined layout obsolete.
