The aircraft

The Mustang was designed and built in 117 days to meet a British order, and its first version was disappointing above 15,000 feet. Fitting a Rolls-Royce Merlin transformed it into the best long-range escort fighter of the war.

Range was the point. A Mustang with drop tanks could fly from England to Berlin and fight when it arrived. Before that, bombers made the deepest part of every mission unescorted and took catastrophic losses doing it.
