The machine
Early typewriters struck the paper from underneath, so the line you were writing was hidden inside the machine. Typists worked blind and lifted the carriage periodically to check. The Model 10 of 1908 was Remington's first front-strike design — typebars hitting the front of the platen, in full view.
The QWERTY layout came from Remington too, and the usual story that it was designed to slow typists down is not quite right. It was arranged to separate the typebars of letter pairs that commonly appear together, so they were less likely to collide and jam mid-stroke.
