The Turtle Ship, known in Korean as Geobukseon, is one of the most iconic warships in East Asian naval history. It was developed during the late 16th century under the command of Admiral Yi Sun-sin, the national hero who led Korea's naval forces during the Imjin War against invading Japanese fleets (1592-1598). Although earlier versions of the Turtle Ship may have existed, Admiral Yi redesigned and perfected the vessel, transforming it into a groundbreaking naval weapon. The ship was famous for its armored, spiked roof, which prevented enemy soldiers from boarding-a common tactic in naval warfare at the time. Its dragon-shaped bow served both symbolic and practical purposes: it boosted morale and, according to historical records, could emit smoke to obscure visibility and confuse enemy ships. Equipped with multiple cannons, rows of fast-moving oars, and a sturdy wooden hull, the Turtle Ship was engineered for close combat, ramming, and rapid maneuverability. The innovative design gave Admiral Yi a decisive strategic advantage, contributing to several major Korean victories, including the Battle of Sacheon and the famous Battle of Myeongnyang. Today, the Turtle Ship is celebrated as a symbol of Korean ingenuity, resilience, and military brilliance.
