The boats
Twenty-six Point-class cutters were sent to Vietnam in 1965 for Operation Market Time, the coastal interdiction campaign aimed at stopping seaborne supply to the Viet Cong.
They were an odd choice — 82 feet of unarmoured search-and-rescue boat, designed for harbour work, sent to patrol a hostile coastline. The Coast Guard added .50 calibre machine guns and an 81mm mortar and sent them anyway, because they had shallow draught and crews trained in boarding and inspection, which was exactly the skill the mission required.
Market Time inspected hundreds of thousands of vessels over eight years.
