The South Korea Dosan Ahn Changho Submarine (KSS-III), also known as the Dosan Ahn Changho-class, is South Korea's first domestically developed diesel-electric submarine capable of launching ballistic missiles. It represents the third phase of the Korean Submarine Development Program, aiming to enhance the Republic of Korea Navy's (ROKN) underwater capabilities and strategic deterrence. Development began in the early 2010s, with the lead submarine, Dosan Ahn Changho, launched in 2018 and commissioned in 2021. The South Korea Dosan Ahn Changho Submarine (KSS-III) features advanced technologies including air-independent propulsion (AIP), improved sonar, and an indigenous combat system. It displaces around 3,700 tons submerged and is armed with torpedoes and up to six submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs). It also incorporates stealth features and longer endurance, making it suitable for extended patrols. This class marks a significant milestone in South Korea's defense industry and regional security posture. Several units are planned across multiple production blocks, with continued upgrades. The South Korea Dosan Ahn Changho Submarine (KSS-III) enhances South Korea's deterrent against regional threats and strengthens its role in maintaining stability in Northeast Asia.
