USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD-6) was a Wasp-class amphibious assault ship of the United States Navy, named in honor of the famous Revolutionary War frigate commanded by John Paul Jones. She was launched in 1997 and commissioned in 1998, designed to support U.S. Marine Corps operations by deploying troops, helicopters, and landing craft. The ship could carry up to 1,800 Marines and a mix of aircraft, including CH-53 helicopters, MV-22 Ospreys, and AV-8B Harrier jets. With a well deck and full flight deck, USS Bonhomme Richard Wasp-Class (LHD-6) was capable of supporting amphibious assaults, humanitarian missions, and disaster relief operations. She was forward-deployed in Japanese for several years, enhancing U.S. presence in the Indo-Pacific region. In July 2020, the ship was severely damaged by a major fire while docked in San Diego. After extensive assessment, the Navy decided to decommission and scrap her in 2021, ending over two decades of distinguished service.
