USS Ohio (SSBN-726) is the lead submarine of the Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines (SSBN) in the United States Navy. Commissioned in 1981 and built by Electric Boat, she is one of the largest submarines ever constructed by the U.S., with a length of 560 feet (170 meters) and a submerged displacement of over 18,700 tons. Designed during the Cold War, USS Ohio was built to carry Trident ballistic missiles, forming a crucial part of American's nuclear triad and providing a stealthy sea-based nuclear deterrent. Originally designed for strategic deterrence missions, Ohio-class submarines like USS Ohio can remain submerged for extended periods, making them highly survivable platforms for nuclear missiles. In the early 2000s, USS Ohio underwent a major conversion, transitioning from a ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) to a guided missile submarine (SSGN). This conversion allowed Ohio to carry cruise missiles and support special operations forces with enhanced capabilities such as deploying unmanned underwater vehicles and divers. USS Ohio remains in active service, playing a vital role in both strategic deterrence and tactical strike missions. Its flexibility and advanced technology make it a key asset in the U.S. Navy's undersea warfare capabilities.
