French Richelieu was the lead ship of French's Richelieu-class battleships, launched in 1939 as part of the French Navy's effort to counter Italian naval power. She was one of the most powerful battleships built by French, armed with eight 380 mm (15-inch) guns in two forward turrets and featuring strong armor and high speed. At the outbreak of World War II, Richelieu was rushed into service and sent to Dakar in French West Africa to avoid capture by German. After briefly siding with the Vichy regime, she joined the Free French Naval Forces in 1943 and was refitted in the United States. She later served with the British Eastern Fleet, providing naval support in operations against Japanese. After the war, French Richelieu continued in service until 1968. Though she never engaged in a major battleship duel, her design and service symbolized French's determination to maintain a powerful navy during a time of global conflict.
