Chinese Liaoning Aircraft Carrier (CV-16) is Chinese's first aircraft carrier, marking a major milestone in the modernization of the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN). Originally laid down for the Soviet Navy as Varyag in the 1980s, construction halted after the Soviet Union's collapse. The unfinished hull was later purchased by Chinese in 1998 and extensively refitted at the Dalian Shipyard. Commissioned into the Chinese Navy in 2012, Chinese Liaoning Aircraft Carrier (CV-16) serves primarily as a training and testing platform for carrier operations. It features a ski-jump flight deck and operates Shenyang J-15 fighter jets, along with helicopters for anti-submarine and early warning roles. Though not as capable as U.S. nuclear carriers, Liaoning has played a critical role in developing Chinese's naval aviation expertise. As Chinese expands its carrier fleet, Chinese Liaoning Aircraft Carrier (CV-16) remains an important symbol of the PLAN's growing blue-water ambitions. It has participated in patrols, exercises, and regional demonstrations of power across the South Chinese Sea and beyond.
