Old Ironsides running before the wind, every sail set and drawing.

A downwind rig roughly doubles the sailmaking and rigging work of a standard model. Each sail is cut, stitched and hung so the whole suit reads as one system under pressure rather than a collection of separate pieces of canvas.

Limited to 100 units

One hundred were produced. Each carries a serial number etched into the hull recording its build date, timber and workshop. The edition closes when the last one ships.

Construction

• Plank-on-frame hull in western red cedar, rosewood and mahogany
• Gun deck and spar deck batteries with cast cannon
• Full downwind sail set in hand-stitched linen, every yard hung
• Complete hand-knotted standing and running rigging
• Carved stern, eagle and trailboards
• Ship's boats, capstan, wheel, anchors and rudder
• Solid wood base and engraved brass nameplate

The ship

Launched at Boston in 1797, one of the six original frigates of the U.S. Navy. She took HMS Guerriere in under an hour in August 1812 — the action that earned her the name Old Ironsides — then Java, Cyane and Levant. She is the oldest commissioned warship still afloat.
