Why two shaped cushions work

Shaped cushions scatter better than square ones. Two stars on a bed at different angles look like something a child arranged; two squares at different angles just look crooked.

The practical argument holds too. One goes in the wash, the other stays on the bed — which matters more for a shaped cushion, because a gap in an arrangement of squares is barely noticeable and a missing star is obvious.
