The battle
On the evening of 23 September 1779, off the Yorkshire coast, John Paul Jones took the worn-out converted merchantman Bonhomme Richard against HMS Serapis, a newer and better-armed frigate. Two of Jones's largest guns burst on the first broadside, killing their own crews.
Jones lashed the two ships together and fought hand to hand for over three hours by moonlight. When the British captain called across to ask whether he had struck his colours, Jones is said to have answered that he had not yet begun to fight.
Serapis surrendered. Bonhomme Richard was so badly holed that Jones transferred his crew to the captured ship and watched his own sink the following morning.
