The subject

Moonlight marine painting is a genre of its own, and a technically brutal one. The painter is working almost entirely in the dark end of the value range, where a mistake of one or two tones flattens the whole canvas — and the single brightest point, the moon's path on the water, has to carry the entire image.

The Dutch painter Aert van der Neer built a career on nothing else in the 17th century. Turner and the American luminists returned to it repeatedly for the same reason: a scene lit by one source, reflected off a moving surface, is the hardest thing in landscape and the most rewarding when it works.
