Historical context

A whaling voyage out of Nantucket lasted three to four years. Ships worked the Pacific, rendered oil at sea in brick try-works built onto the deck, and returned only when the hold was full.

Whale oil lit American and European cities before petroleum existed, which is what made the trade worth the danger — and what drove several species close to extinction. Kerosene ended it within two decades of arriving.

We list this as a historical record of a New England industry, not as a celebration of it.
