The car
The Corvette launched in 1953 as a six-cylinder curiosity with an automatic gearbox and nearly died within two years — it was slower than the British roadsters it was meant to beat and sold badly. Zora Arkus-Duntov, a Belgian-born engineer who had joined Chevrolet after seeing the show car, pushed a V8 into it for 1955 and spent the next two decades turning it into a genuine sports car.
It has now been in continuous production for over seventy years, longer than any other American nameplate of its kind.
