Handcrafted with metal propellers, rolling landing wheels and hand-painted finish with decal insignia — the deep fuselage, long wing and gun positions of the aircraft that flew the daylight campaign over Europe.

The type
American heavy bombers flew by day while the RAF flew by night, and the reasoning was doctrinal: the U.S. Army Air Forces believed a tight formation of heavily armed bombers could defend itself and hit precise targets in daylight.
The first two years proved otherwise. Unescorted raids on Schweinfurt and Regensburg in 1943 lost around a fifth of the attacking force in a single day. What eventually made the theory work was not more guns but the long-range escort fighter — the P-51 — arriving in 1944.
