The machine

8mm film was a Depression-era cost-cutting trick, and a clever one. Kodak took 16mm stock, ran it through the camera twice exposing half the width each time, then slit it down the middle after processing and spliced the halves — giving four times the running time from the same amount of film at a quarter of the cost.

That is the entire reason home movies became affordable. Nearly every family film made between the 1930s and the 1970s exists because of it.
