The mission
On 3 June 1965, Ed White opened the hatch of Gemini IV and floated outside for 23 minutes, manoeuvring with a handheld oxygen gun. He enjoyed it so much that returning to the capsule took repeated instruction from the ground; he later called coming back in the saddest moment of his life.
The hatch then refused to latch properly, and White and Jim McDivitt had to wrestle it shut by hand in pressurised suits while in vacuum. White died two years later in the Apollo 1 fire.
