Why a spring
A spring stem does what an articulated arm does with none of the joints — push the head where you want it and the coil holds position by friction and tension. Fewer moving parts, nothing to loosen over time, and the whole mechanism is visible rather than hidden inside a housing.
The weighted base is doing the real work. A lamp you can reposition needs to stay put when you reposition it.
