The van
The Type 2 exists because a Dutch VW importer named Ben Pon visited Wolfsburg in 1947, saw workers moving parts on a flatbed cobbled together from Beetle running gear, and sketched a boxy van in his notebook. Volkswagen built it.
It became transport for tradesmen, families, surfers and eventually an entire counterculture — not because it was good at any of those things particularly, but because it was cheap, endlessly repairable, and had room in the back.
