History
Commissioned in August 1942, Alabama spent her first year in the North Atlantic with the British Home Fleet covering convoys to Murmansk, then transferred to the Pacific.
She earned nine battle stars — the Gilberts, the Marshalls, the Marianas, the Philippine Sea, Leyte, Okinawa — mostly as an anti-aircraft escort for the fast carrier groups. In that role she shot down at least 22 aircraft.
Her crew called her the Lucky A. She was never seriously damaged, and the only fatalities aboard came from a friendly-fire accident when one of her own turrets fired across another.
Scheduled for scrapping in 1962, she was saved by a public campaign in which Alabama schoolchildren donated coins. She is a museum ship at Mobile Bay.
