The ship
Commissioned in 2001, Winston S. Churchill is an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer with an unusual arrangement written into her commission.
A Royal Navy officer serves aboard permanently as part of the ship's company — not a liaison, but a working member of the crew, a post that has been continuously filled since she entered service. She flies the White Ensign alongside the Stars and Stripes, the only US Navy ship permitted to do so.
Her ship's bell was a gift from the Queen. Her motto, In War: Resolution. In Peace: Goodwill, is Churchill's own.
