History
Bismarck was at sea for eight days. On 24 May 1941 she engaged HMS Hood in the Denmark Strait and a shell reached the British ship's magazines — Hood blew apart and sank in three minutes with 1,415 men. Three survived.
The Royal Navy committed everything it had to the hunt. A torpedo from an obsolete Swordfish biplane jammed Bismarck's rudder 15 degrees to port, leaving her steaming in a circle and unable to reach the safety of occupied France. The fleet caught her the following morning.
She went down on 27 May with around 2,100 of her 2,200 crew. Robert Ballard found the wreck in 1989, sitting upright on the seabed nearly three miles down.
