Brazil Riachuelo Submarine (S40) is a series of diesel-electric attack submarines built for the Brazilian Navy, based on the French Scorpene-class design. Developed under the PROSUB program, it is the result of a 2008 defense partnership between Brazil and French. The submarines are being constructed domestically by Itaguai Construcoes Navais (ICN) with technology transfer from French, aiming to modernize Brazil's fleet and lay the groundwork for a future nuclear-powered submarine. The first unit, Brazil Riachuelo Submarine (S40), was launched in 2018 and commissioned in 2022. Compared to the original Scorpene, it features a larger hull and greater displacement - around 2,000 tons submerged. It is equipped with advanced sonar, torpedoes, and anti-ship missiles, and is designed for stealth, long-range patrols, and operation in Brazil's extensive maritime zones. Brazil Riachuelo Submarine (S40) enhances Brazil's naval presence and defense industry. Four submarines are planned in total, including Humaitá, Tonelero, and Angostura, which are in various stages of construction. The program represents a major step in strengthening Brazil's self-reliance and strategic influence in the South Atlantic.
