The boat
Riachuelo was launched in 2018, the first of four Scorpène-class submarines built at Itaguaí under a technology transfer agreement with France.
The submarines are not really the point of the programme. PROSUB exists to give Brazil the industrial capability to build its own nuclear submarine — the conventional boats are the training exercise, and a domestically designed nuclear attack submarine is the objective. If completed it would make Brazil the only country outside the UN Security Council's permanent five to operate one.
She is named for the Battle of Riachuelo, fought on the Paraguay River in 1865 and regarded as the defining action in Brazilian naval history.
