The ship

Kaga was laid down as a battleship and converted after the Washington Treaty, which gave her a broad, heavily built hull and made her the largest-capacity carrier in the Japanese fleet — she could carry more aircraft than Akagi despite being slower.

Her original design was strange even by the standards of early carriers: two extra flying-off decks stepped down from the bow, meant to launch fighters while the main deck handled bombers. It never worked and was removed in a 1930s rebuild.

She flew aircraft against Pearl Harbor, Rabaul and Darwin. At Midway on 4 June 1942 she took four bomb hits in minutes, burned all day and sank that evening with over 800 of her crew.
