The design
The Admiral Hipper class was the largest heavy cruiser design of its generation and, by most assessments, over-engineered. The machinery was complex and unreliable, the range was short, and the ships displaced far more than the treaty limits they were nominally built under.
What they had was protection and firepower comparable to a small battleship, and a genuinely handsome profile — the raked clipper bow was added after the class entered service to improve seakeeping.
History
Fought alongside Bismarck in the Denmark Strait, escaped the hunt that killed her, survived the war, was taken by the US Navy as IX-300, survived two atomic tests at Bikini, and capsized at Kwajalein in 1946.
