The funnel
Look at the starboard side. Japanese carriers vented their boilers through a large funnel curved downward and outward over the water, rather than upward through a conventional stack.
The reasoning was that hot exhaust rising across a flight deck creates turbulence that makes landing dangerous. Directing it down and away solved that — at the cost of a permanent list correction and a great deal of heat along one side of the ship.
The Americans solved the same problem by putting the funnel in the island. Japan's answer looks stranger and worked about as well.
History
Flagship of the Pearl Harbor attack force. Crippled by dive bombers at Midway on 5 June 1942 and scuttled. Her wreck was located in 2019, over 5,000 metres down.
