The boat

The dhow is one of the oldest continuously used ship designs in the world, sailing the Indian Ocean and the Gulf for well over a thousand years. Its lateen sail — a triangle on a long angled yard — let it sail much closer to the wind than the square rig Europe was using, and Arab traders were crossing to India and East Africa on the monsoon winds while European ships were still coast-hugging.

Traditional dhows were built without plans. A master builder worked from proportion and memory, and the shape of the hull existed only in his head and in the boat itself.
