Why this ship
Launched at Boston in 1797 and never decommissioned since, Constitution got her nickname in August 1812 when a sailor watching British roundshot bounce off her live-oak side shouted that her hull must be made of iron. She defeated four Royal Navy warships in that war and is the oldest commissioned warship still afloat.
