One of the largest sailing ships in the world, and a demanding subject: four masts, a mixed rig, and a long white hull with almost no ornament to hide behind.
Built plank on frame in western red cedar, rosewood and mahogany, hand-painted. A barquentine carries square sails on the foremast only and fore-and-aft canvas on the other three, which means two entirely different rigging systems on one model, both hand-knotted.

The ship
Launched at Cádiz in 1953, Esmeralda is a sail training ship of the Chilean Navy and a near-sister to the Spanish Juan Sebastián de Elcano. At 113 metres she is among the longest sailing vessels afloat, and she carries a figurehead of a condor, the national bird of Chile.
