About the type
Pirates of the golden age sailed captured ships, not purpose-built ones — usually a merchant sloop or brigantine, cut down and rerigged for speed and firepower. Speed mattered more than armament: the goal was to overhaul a slower prize and frighten it into surrender before a shot was fired.
