• Four masts, barque-rigged, with complete hand-knotted standing and running rigging

History

Launched at Kiel in 1921 as Magdalene Vinnen II, she was one of the last great commercial windjammers — built to carry cargo under sail at a time when steam had already won, and profitable because she needed no coal. Renamed Kommodore Johnsen in 1936, she passed to the Soviet Union as war reparations in 1945 and was renamed for the Arctic explorer Georgy Sedov. At 117 metres she remains the largest traditional sailing vessel in operation, and she still sails as a training ship.
