Shaped vs printed

A printed star on a square cushion is a pattern. A star-shaped cushion is an object — children pick it up, carry it around and sleep on it in a way they do not with a square one.

Shaped cushions are also harder to make well. The points have to be filled evenly or they go limp and floppy at the tips, and every seam is a curve or a corner rather than a straight run.
