The aircraft
The Camel took its name from the hump over its twin Vickers guns. Nearly all its weight — engine, guns, pilot, fuel — sat in the front seven feet of the fuselage, and the rotary engine's spinning mass produced enormous torque. It could turn right faster than anything in the sky and would flick into a spin without warning if mishandled.
Camels shot down 1,294 enemy aircraft, more than any other Allied type. They also killed a large number of their own trainee pilots. Experienced flyers loved them; the RFC's training casualties tell the other half of the story.
