The aircraft
The Fokker Dr.I traded speed for something more useful in a dogfight: an extraordinary rate of climb and a turning circle nothing on the Allied side could follow. Manfred von Richthofen scored his last 19 victories in one, taking his total to 80 — the highest of the war.
He was killed on 21 April 1918, hit by a single bullet while pursuing a novice pilot at low altitude over Australian lines. Who fired it has been argued about for a century; the balance of evidence now favours ground fire rather than the Canadian pilot originally credited. Australian troops stripped his aircraft for souvenirs within hours.
