Rectangular vs oval

This is the practical choice of the two. A rectangular basket sits square against the back and sides of a shelf, wastes almost no space, and lines up flush with its neighbours. An oval one is softer to look at and leaves gaps at every corner.

In a cube shelving unit or a fitted wardrobe, rectangular wins comfortably. On an open dresser or a kitchen worktop, where the basket is seen from all sides, oval often looks better.

The material

Willow rods are cut annually from coppiced beds and woven while still green and flexible, then set hard as they dry. It is one of the oldest continuously practised crafts in Europe.
