Why willow

Willow has been the basket material across Europe for thousands of years, and the reason is that it does something no other common wood does: fresh-cut willow rods bend to a tight curve without snapping, then set hard as they dry.

Basket willow is coppiced — cut to the stump every year, which the plant not only survives but requires to keep producing straight rods. A well-managed willow bed can be productive for fifty years or more.

Oval baskets suit narrower shelves than round ones and hold more than they appear to. Keep them out of prolonged damp, and they will last decades.
