The ship
Antonio Jacobsen painted ships for a living — several thousand of them, mostly commissioned by the captains and owners who sailed them, which is why his work is a better record of late-19th-century merchant shipping than any photographic archive.
Carpathia is remembered for one night. On 15 April 1912 she was 58 miles from Titanic when her wireless operator picked up the distress call — he had stayed at his set past the end of his shift by chance. Captain Rostron turned north, shut off heat and hot water to divert every ounce of steam to the engines, and drove his ship through an ice field at above her rated speed for three and a half hours.
He arrived too late to save the ship and in time to save 705 people. A German torpedo sank Carpathia in 1918.
