The subject
The Channel Fleet guarded the approaches to Britain and the western entrance to the Channel — the station that mattered most, because whoever controlled that water controlled whether an invasion fleet could sail.
Its defining work was not battle but blockade: months at sea off Brest and Ushant in Atlantic weather, keeping the French fleet bottled up. Ships stayed on station through winter gales on a lee shore, which killed more men and wrecked more vessels than enemy action ever did.
A heavy-weather scene is the honest subject for that service. Most of it looked like this and almost none of it looked like Trafalgar.
