The race
Britannia was built in 1893 to a G.L. Watson design for the Prince of Wales, later Edward VII. Vigilant was Nathanael Herreshoff's America's Cup defender from the same year, brought across the Atlantic in 1894 to race the British fleet in home waters.
They met repeatedly that season off Cowes, in front of the Royal Yacht Squadron. Britannia won the majority — she raced for over forty years and took 231 prizes in 635 starts, which is a record no yacht of her class approaches.
When George V died in 1936 he left instructions that Britannia be scuttled rather than sold. She was stripped and sunk off the Isle of Wight.
