Hanging a pair

A matched pair does something a single picture cannot: it establishes a rhythm on a wall. The usual guidance is to treat the two as one composition — centre the pair on the wall or the furniture below, not each picture individually, and keep the gap between them narrower than the width of either frame. Two to four inches works for pieces this size.

Centre height should put the midpoint of the pair at roughly eye level, around 57 to 60 inches from the floor, unless they are going above a sofa or console — in which case hang from the furniture, leaving six to eight inches of clear wall above it.

Pairs suit a hallway, a stairwell, or the wall behind a dining table.
