The railroad

Union Pacific built west from Omaha while the Central Pacific built east from Sacramento, and the two met at Promontory Summit, Utah on 10 May 1869. The golden spike driven that day was wired to a telegraph line so that the hammer blow rang bells simultaneously in New York and San Francisco — arguably the first live national broadcast of anything.

Union Pacific is still operating, which makes it one of the oldest continuously running companies in America.
