The vehicle
The Suburban has been in production since 1935, which makes it the longest-running nameplate in American automotive history. It began as a steel body bolted to a commercial truck chassis, sold to schools, hotels and the military as a people carrier — the earliest ones were called Carryalls.
The post-war models found civilian buyers who wanted to take families, boats and gear somewhere at the weekend. Everything from the station wagon to the modern SUV descends from that idea.
