The vehicle

The tow truck was invented in 1916 by a Chattanooga garage owner named Ernest Holmes, who had spent eight hours and six men pulling a friend's car out of a creek with ropes and decided there had to be a better way. He bolted a crane to a Cadillac chassis.

By the 1930s the Model A was the standard base for small-town wreckers — cheap, plentiful and strong enough for the job. It's a natural piece for a garage, workshop or office of anyone in the trade.
